Get Lucky, On Purpose

Luck and effort. One is random. One is earned. Or so we are told.

Most people treat luck like weather. It happens to you. You wait, you hope, you complain. And for the first kind of luck, blind chance, they are right. Lottery tickets. Being born in the right decade. Nothing to do there.

But Naval’s insight is that luck comes in four escalating kinds, and only the first one is out of your hands.

The second kind comes from hustle. You move so much, try so much, stir the pot so hard that you collide with opportunities a still person never meets. Luck through motion.

The third comes from preparation. You know a field so deeply that you notice the lucky break others walk straight past. The fortune was visible to everyone. Only the trained eye saw it. Luck through sight.

And the fourth, the strangest one: you become known for something so specific that luck starts seeking you out. The collector gets offered the rare find first. The honest dealmaker gets the call no one else gets. You built a character, and the character became a magnet.

Randomness Favours the Ready. Destiny Favours the Defined.

Notice the progression. Each kind of luck is less random than the last. By the fourth, calling it luck is almost unfair. It is reputation, compounding. It looks like an accident from outside and like inevitability from inside.

Waiting for kind one while ignoring kinds two through four is the real gamble.

Engineering Your Luck

• Increase your surface area. Ship things, meet people, publish, ask. Collisions create chances.

• Go deep enough in one field that you can spot the anomaly everyone else misses.

• Become publicly, reliably known for one specific thing. Specific reputations attract specific opportunities.

• Be easy to find and easy to trust. Luck travels through people.

Do this for a decade and people will call you lucky. Let them. You will know what it actually was.
