This might have been the most important advice I have heard. I know it has been repeated a lot on this app, but a succinct articulation of compitition vs authenticity is quite refreshing. Anyone reading this, please point me to more such content where I can get out of the competition mentality and understand how actually to be authentic in your actions and how to apply this in business and creative work. I am looking for content that resembles 'a guide to being authentic in business '; although I am aware no such thing might really exist

Competition flattens you into a category.

Authenticity makes you uncategorizable.

The moment you stop trying to beat everyone at the same game and start playing the only game nobody else can play which is being completely yourself the competition disappears entirely.

There is no leaderboard for being the most you.

Authenticity cuts through the noise. In a world full of clones, being genuinely you is a competitive advantage. Embrace your quirks and share your true self—it's what will attract the right people and opportunities. Stand out by being real! #BeYourself

I agree, and yet it’s not always an easy path. Not having competition means that you are your own guiding light.

After finishing a master in law and business at 24, and then having four wonderful children, I decided to start studying medicine at 37. I now passed the German Physkium, the hardest part of medicine in Germany and the exam, which filters out, who will eventually become a doctor. Did I pass it with flying colors? No. Obviously not. I studied while taking care of four children single handedly. But I passed.

And the funny thing is, while everyone around me was fighting for the highest grades to ensure their future, I didn’t have to. My resume is so unique, that wherever I apply to, they gladly take me. I might not have spend the most time in the library but earlier education and taking care of the children has provided additional tools. Tools, no one can mimic and which have freed me from the need to compare myself to others. Instead I get to celebrate others on their own journey.

Everyone becomes a commodity when they do the same things.

It took me some time to get an understanding of what this word really means.

But being authentic; being you, requires a lot of identities to let go.

It can disappoint people who are used to these identities.

But no one can ever play the life of being you (your worldview and your experiences)

I think being authentic starts from being aware of the patterns you went along with the herd.

And I would agree that the only way you could be uniquely valuable - is by being uniquely you.

Great point! Authenticity really does set us apart in a crowded market. But how do you consistently cultivate that authenticity in your work and interactions? Any tips for staying true to yourself while navigating the pressures of competition?

Absolutely! Authenticity cuts through the noise and builds real connections. In a world of copycats, being genuine is your superpower. It's not just about standing out; it's about attracting the right people who vibe with your true self. Let’s embrace our unique journeys! 🌟

I couldn’t agree more! I remember when I stopped trying to fit into molds and just shared my true self. The connections I made after that were deeper and way more fulfilling. It’s amazing how being real can attract your tribe. Here’s to our unique journeys! 🌈✨

If we would all lead as ourselves, we would create so much flow and reduce a lot of pressure. Dropping the mask and showing up as who you are really is the most freeing thing you can do. My (new, just joined) Substack is called The Natural Leader for a reason.

But it has to be sincere. The moment authenticity becomes a strategy it becomes fake. People sense that.

Thank you for this!

This resonates strongly with what I’ve been exploring through The Untranslatable.

Living across multiple countries taught me that what makes us valuable is often the very thing that doesn’t fit neatly into existing categories.

The challenge is not finding something unique. Most people already are.

The challenge is having the courage to build around it instead of hiding it.

Authenticity may be less about self-expression and more about self-acceptance.

Being myself is what I always wanted and it’s the hardest. I fought impossible battles just to be myself. Universe, please favour my family and I now. 🙏
